Do you have a pre-writing ritual? Mine is to take a pen and start writing.
It really can be that easy. Ok. Ready? Go:
She stomped on the hat.
But she did not cry.
- Beginners: Set a timer for five to 15 minutes. If you’re just beginning a writing practice, write for five minutes. That’s enough. Then add a minute or two every day until you’re up to 15. It’s just like learning to run, baby. You don’t do the marathon on day one.
- Intermediates: Set a timer for 15 minutes. Write a SCENE: ensure the piece you’re writing has a beginning, middle, and an end that makes sense. If you’re not at the end when the times goes off… keep on writing.
- Advanced: Who needs a timer, right? Write to a natural stop… Subvert the prompt so that it serves your WIP or current writing project. Everything is source material, everything is a tool.
