WHAT IS IT:
The Official Version, from the WWC Website: When Words Collide is an annual non-profit festival modelled after the volunteer conventions popular in the Science Fiction and Fantasy communities. Nobody is paid for attending (though guests of honour have their expenses covered) and even the organizers buy passes to attend.
The festival is designed to bring readers and writers together in a celebration of the written word. Up to 10 tracks of programming, beginning at 1 PM on Friday and running through 5 PM Sunday, offer informational, educational, and social activities covering a wide spectrum of literature including Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Historical, Literary, Script-writing, Poetry, Comics, and Non-fiction. Roughly 800 readers, writers, editors, publishers, agents, and artists attend with over a hundred presenters in our program.
For my version, read:
- When Words Collide: The ‘little’ yyc reader + writer festival that could change your life
- When Words Collide 2018: Panel and Workshop Materials Up
2019 SPECIAL GUESTS
- Kat Flannery
- James Alan Gardner

WHERE TO FIND JANE
I’m not presenting or moderating any panels at WWC this year, because, Radical Prioritization, and, not setting yourself up for failure. But I am on site all weekend in The Merchants’ Corner, primarily around the Alberta Romance Writers’ Association and Calgary Association of Romance Writers of America tables, both of which will be selling some of ma’ books. I’ll have the last of the YYC Queer Writers’ A QUEER SUMMER NIGHT IN COWNTOWN anthology there (at the ARWA table), so come and get your copy!
I’ll also have a few ARCs from my new Dirty Writing Secrets series and some news to share about that, so come find me and chat me up.
Advice for newcomers: Introduce yourself to people. Say hi. For those of you who are going to WWC to fangirl and fanboy, do it–don’t be shy. We all love it. It makes up for all the agent/publisher rejection and tough love. For those of you who are going to WWC to network… try this: You’re not there to find people who will help you sell your books. You’re there to connect with people whom you can help. It’s a liberating mindfuck of a paradigm shift.
