And now, something completely different: Murder and Mayhem, or, learning while in bed during the apocalypse

Murder & Mayhem is an annual Chicago conference featuring Chicago’s top mystery writers. The 2020 conference was, obviously, cancelled—and the organizers moved at lightening speed to put it all online.

So I spent my Saturday in a slightly elevated position in bed nursing my psychosomatic (probably not Covid19) sore throat learning from Chicago murder mystery authors, and now I have such a fabulous new-to-me reading list.

The conference hit more than 900 online attendees at 1 pm MST!

Criticism: I’m just hyper-aware of this because of what went down with RWA, but, wow, until Angie Kim came on in the last session, it was an all-white conference.

Our stats in publishing are pretty bad, and I know this kind of homogeneity does not happen by conference designers’ design… but when it’s the default mode of unexamined decisions, that’s as damaging, in the results, as planned exclusion.

Anyway—I learned a lot! And my throat hurts less, and tomorrow I plan to leave the deathbed and perhaps interact with the children. Maybe THINK about writing.

I am very, very grateful the organizers.
